Two Tips To Follow When Working With An Interior Designer

Posted on: 2 April 2021

Here are a few tips to follow if you are going to be using an interior designer's services.

Be specific and remember to discuss the type of interior design you dislike, too

When you have your first consultation with the interior designer, you will spend a lot of it showing them magazine cut-outs and online images of the interior design projects you like and want in your space. However, it is very important not to just highlight the decorative trends and color palettes you love but to also point out to the designer any specific design details that you want to avoid in your space.

This matters because when you speak to them in broad terms about the design ideas you love, the interior designer will then need to fill in the blanks of these ideas for their decor plan for you. For example, if you tell them you love sumptuous fabrics and the color pink, they might decide to use some pastel pink, raw silk fabric to make curtains for your bedroom. However, this could cause an issue if you dislike how rough the texture of raw silk is or if you only like rich, dark pinks. As such, it is important to focus on your positive interior design opinions and to be as specific as you can be during your conversations with this expert.

Be patient and let the project proceed at a sensibly slow pace

Unless there is a specific reason why the interior design project must be finished quickly (for example, if you want a guest room decorated by the end of the month), it is worth exercising your patience and allowing this project to progress at a reasonably slow pace.

This is because designing a room so that it looks its best, functions really well, and feels comfortable to be in takes time. If you do not want to decorate the room with mass-produced ornaments, readymade soft furnishings, and bland furniture, then you will need to give your interior designer time to source the right fabrics, to have the scatter cushions and curtains made, and to visit antique furniture stores in search of unique pieces of furniture. The wait will almost certainly be worth it, as you will end up with a room in which every design detail has been considered and made as perfect as possible.
